A
lot of people are working on technical solutions to screen
out the undesirable Internet materials. They create software
that limits access to computers, the Internet or specific
parts of the electronic world. The Firewalls site provides
a comprehensive view on Internet security. Much attention
has focused on Surfwatch which screens newsgroups, Web sites,
and FTP locations. Other software- screening alternatives
include CyberPatrol, NetNanny and others. Time's Up lets parents
set time limits for use of on-line services. The following
lists some screening software, some filtration projects and
research groups involved in filtering systems.
Surfwatch
SurfWatch is a new type of software which helps parents, educators
and employers reduce the risk of children and others uncovering
sexually explicit material on the Internet. SurfWatch and
Compuserve team up to produce this software.
Cybersitter
The Cybersitter is a Window program that will give the user
the capability to block access to the common types of graphics
files as well as specified files and programs.
Netnanny
The NetNanny provide an invisible monitor between the Internet
and the family. It operates quietly in the background, carefully
screening out user defined "words", "phrases"
and other contents that the user considers as inappropriate.
Safesurf
The Safesurf is an organization who aim is to create a giant
safe cyber-playground. It is implementing an Internet rating
standard that is bringing together parents, providers, publishers
and developers and others making the child safe sites with
the SafeSurf Wave.
Cyber Patrol
The Cyber Patrol is a software of Microsystems Software Inc.
It provides time managenemt, full Internet access management
with parental preference control and application blocking.
The Home Edition provides basic Internet filtering of pornographic
materials, violence, partial nudity art, sexual acts, texts
and gross depictions.
NewsClip
The NewsClip is a rule-based filtering system. The user can
specify inclusion and exclusion criteria for information streams
such as UseNet and the commercial newsfeeds sold by the owner's
of NewsClip, ClariNet. The ClariNet newsfeeds include world
news, sports, and business news, through the API and Reuters
news feeds as well as access to computer and Internet related
articles. The commercial newsfeed is available though site
licensees and individual subscriptions, although the rates
are expensive.
MIT
Filtering Agents
The MIT Media Center's agents filter news and make recommendations
about the relevance of interesting messages. They use a machine
learning technique to construct interest profiles for a user.
When an agent is in doubt about a recommendation on a certain
message, it consults other users' agents to see what they
would recommend. The agent gets feedback on its recommendations
based on user ratings of the messages. The agents use a sophisticated
genetic algorithm to evolve a dynamic interest profile.
